1. Makharij — Articulation Points for Every Arabic Letter
The Arabic letter خ (Kha) originates from the back of the oral cavity, not the throat. The letter ع (‘Ayn) comes from the middle of the throat, not the chest. These distinctions are not cosmetic — producing a letter from the wrong Makhraj changes the word, and changing a word in the Quran during recitation is a Tajweed error with jurisprudential weight.
2. Sifaat — Letter Attributes That Govern Sound Quality
Beyond where a letter originates, every Arabic letter carries attributes — Hams (whisper), Jahr (voice), Shiddah (strength), Rakhawah (softness) — that determine how it sounds in recitation. Most self-taught students produce the correct Makhraj but lose the Sifah entirely.
3. Noon Sakinah and Tanween — The Four Governing Rules
Izhar, Idgham, Iqlab, and Ikhfa each apply under specific letter conditions that follow Noon Sakinah and Tanween. A practitioner error common in Dubai’s non-native recitation community: students apply Ikhfa to all 15 of its letters uniformly — but Ikhfa degree varies. The nasalization applied before ق and ك is heavier than before ف and ث, reflecting the letter’s distance from the Makhraj of the Noon.

Madd Tabee’i holds two counts. Madd Munfasil and Madd Muttasil extend to four or five counts depending on the reader’s chosen level of practice. Madd ‘Arid Lissukoon — the most common Madd in standard recitation — allows two, four, or six counts at Waqf.
